The American Buffalo, also known as a Gold Buffalo, is a 24-karat bullion coin first offered for sale by the United States Mint on June 22, 2006. The coin follows the greatly admired design of the Indian Head nickel and has gained its nickname from the American Bison on the reverse side of the design. The Gold Buffalo is the United States Mint first 24-karat, pure gold (.9999% fineness) 1 oz. coin.
Currently, all U.S. bullion coins, including the American Buffalo gold piece, are being struck at the West Point Mint in New York. Gold bullion coins from the United States Mint are the only official gold bullion coins whose weight, content and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government, making them a recognizable and safe option for investors in the US and worldwide.
Gold American Buffalos are legal tender for all debts public and private and are an unhedged asset, meaning they are minted in unlimited quantity to meet market demand.
